Q:Hey there, I've recently told my parents that I want to change my name and they are trying very hard to get it right which is awesome but I always feel weird seeing someone I used to go to school with and they call me by my birth name. Any polite ways to correct them that you can think of? p.s. I don't have a Facebook so I can't exactly send out a PSA or anything.

Oi! I know exactly what you mean. I am getting a lot of that lately.

How I go about it is by just letting them know what I go by now. If I do not feel comfortable discussing my trans* identity, I will tell them that I prefer folks to call me by my ‘nickname’ and tell them what my preferred name is. Some folks ask questions. Most leave it at that.

Most likely, you will have to remind folks from time to time, but if you are laid back about it - most folks are easy-going and just go with it.

I hope that helps! Best of luck!

Riley

We are a friendly queer couple in our twenties. One of us is a cisgender woman named Tashia and the other is a trans* guy named Riley. We blog about life, love, and whatever we find that could be useful or interesting to human rights activists of all kinds.

We specifically created this safe space for folks in need of guidance/advice regarding:

★ relationships/dating
★ coming out
★ dealing w/dysphoria
★ transitioning
★ safe sex/sex education
★ and much more

We especially hope to provide help to those who identify as trans* and/or queer or questioning.
