Bedsider: Method Monday: Condoms! → bedsider.tumblr.com

In honor of STD Awareness Month, we’ve decided this Method Monday to feature the only method of birth control available on the U.S. market that protects against both pregnancy and STDs (a.k.a. STIs). You know it, you love it, you probably think of it every time you hear the phrase “safe sex.” It’s…the condom!

The condom comes in two forms—external (which we refer to as the male condom on Bedsider) and internal (which we call the female condom)—and both protect against STIs. We did a Method Monday post about the condom for vaginas recently—check it out if you haven’t already—so this Monday we’re focusing on the condom for penises. So what is there to know?

  • It’s available in flavors, so you can use it more pleasantly for oral sex. That’s good news since some STIs can be transmitted via oral sex.
  • Two is not better than one when it comes to condoms.
  • We won’t say that using a condom feels exactly the same as not using one, but it’s hardly like wearing a rain coat. (Some folks even say they feel great and/or that they help guys last longer.)
  • Condoms may not be one size fits all—but we have it on good authority that the normal ones can fit around a human head. And then there are condoms that are designed for the well-endowed, like Magnums. In other words, if he says he’s too big, he’s not trying hard enough.
  • Most condoms are made of latex (and most people are not allergic to it), but if one of you has a latex allergy, there are other options.
  • 30% of young adults in the U.S. say they know little or nothing about condoms, and 11% of folks who had a condom fail said it was because they used a sharp object to open the wrapper.
  • Which brings us to our last point: condoms work best if you use them right. We’ve got information on how on Bedsider—or, if you have an iPhone, download Condom Pro, a game we made to help you get some practice.

Happy wrapping!

*External condoms aren’t just used by ‘men’, Internal condoms aren’t just used by ‘women.’

Zachery Gray before his suicide attempt

Zephyrhills High School in Florida, which saw a student try to take his own life because of antigay bullying a year ago, is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education.

The department’s Office of Civil Rights is investigating based on a complaint by the mother of Zachery Gray that he and other students “have been subjected to harassment based on gender stereotypes,” Tampa Bay–area TV station

pro-tip: if your ally-ship is dependent on

  • the minority group not making you feel bad
  • not calling out the majority you are apart of
  • carefully wording every phrase so allies don’t get their feelings hurt
  • making space for allies in minority spaces
  • allowing/not opposing majority voices to spearhead discussion of the minority’s issues
  • otherwise making allowances for your ego and your feelings and your priorities over that of the minority group you’re supposedly an ally to

you are no ally at all

Would you ever considering adding other couples to the blog just for a varied opinion? I absolutely love this blog and can't wait to see where it goes in the future!

Hello Anon!

Other couples are always encouraged to submit to us, we would love to hear from them! As of right now, Riley and I haven’t discussed adding other couples to the blog. Ideally, we want Lovers In Transition to be a safe space for everyone. Allowing other couples with similar intentions to moderate would definitely be a good way to throw in a mix of opinion and experiences. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nearly There: A Queer POC Zine → thepeculiarkind.com

thepeculiarkind:

Deadline: 1 August 2012

Nearly There: A Queer POC Zine

What: Nearly There is a zine project meant to address the serious absence and silencing of stories about the experiences of queer people of color. For those of us who occupy the spaces of both queer and of color (along with all our other identities), this project is about creating an arena where we can listen and be heard, find commonality and difference, and leave a mark in the making of our own queer history and POC history.

Who: Knowing full well that for many of us, terms like queer or LGBTQ+ often do not and cannot truly measure who we are but being limited by the lack of other terms, this project is for, by, and about queer/LGBTQ+ youth of color including those of us who are low-income/working class, 1st/1.5/2nd/3rd generation im/migrants, city based, Mestiz@, Chican@, rural based, bi/multi racial or mixed, undocumented, same-gender-lovin, formerly or currently incarcerated, parents, dark skinned, from any spiritual background, college educated, butch, femme, aggs, street-involved, etc, etc, etc.

Theme: For this first issue, the theme is relatively open and inclusive of any issue, concern, or interest of queer POC. Ideally looking for submissions about in/visibility in queer and POC communities, discourses on coming/being out or not, finding and creating queer POC spaces, and more. Email me with your questions! Submit: stories, poetry, art, non-fiction (in any format), drawings, photos, portraits, quotes, essays, etc.
